About the reading
Yes. We compute planetary positions with drik-ganita, the observational and astronomically exact method, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. This is the standard adopted by the Government of India's calendar reform. Houses are whole-sign, the Navamsa (D9) is cast alongside the birth chart, and life periods follow the Vimshottari Dasha. We then read your chart by the classical rules of Jyotish: yogas, doshas, house lordships and planetary strength.
The ascendant (lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born — changes roughly every two hours, and it fixes all twelve houses of your chart. A difference of even fifteen or twenty minutes can move the lagna, shift the houses, and change the dates in your Dasha timeline. The time on a birth certificate or hospital record is best.
If you only know an approximate time, tell us so on the order form. We still read your Moon sign, nakshatra and Dasha periods fully, and your report marks the parts that depend on the exact lagna.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. The two have drifted about 24° apart over the centuries, so most people's Vedic sign is one sign back from the one they read in a newspaper horoscope.
Jyotish also gives far more weight to the Moon and the ascendant than to the Sun, reads the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), and — most usefully — times events through the Dasha system, so a reading says not only what but when.
Because the sidereal and tropical zodiacs are about 24° apart. If your Sun falls in the first 24° or so of a Western sign, it falls in the previous sign in Jyotish. In Vedic astrology, though, your Moon sign and ascendant say more about you than your Sun sign — and those are what your Janam Kundli gives you.
Yes — choose "Unknown" for the time on the form. We will cast a Moon-based (Chandra lagna) chart, which still gives your rashi, nakshatra, Dasha periods and most yogas. Your report marks the parts that depend on an exact time.
